  • If patient complains of pain after mobilization for more than a day, what should be a wise decision taken by PT?

It is often advised that PTs give their patients a timely ‘heads-up’ if mobilizations – especially spinal mobilizations – are going to form part of the patients treatment. A typical caveat may go something like this, ‘you may feel some soreness after the mobilizations I’m going to carry out which should recede with time. Kindly let me know if the soreness persists… or if you notice any adverse reactions (e.g. increased pain)’. Ideally, post-mobilization soreness is often dissipated within a few hours and usually herald the relief being sought by the patient.

Therefore, in a situation where pain has persisted for more than a day, the best course of action would first be to discontinue mobilizations, then document, possibly request additional investigative tests, consult with other members of the health team and refer appropriately if the situation warrants.
