To better understand the gross movements of the pelvis and its resultant effect on the lumbar spine, the word pelvic ’tilt’ is preferred to ‘shift’ (for example, to ‘shift’ the pelvis may have no net effect on the spine). In addition, for clarity, the effects of pelvic tilts are described in terms of lumbar lordosis or lumbar flattening/straightening.

Following from this principle, an anterior tilt of the pelvis will cause (or enhance) lumbar lordosis while a posterior pelvic tilt will flatten the lumbar curve/spine.
