  • Is Ultrasound given for TMJ dysfunction? If so will the parameters be like 3MHz at 0.5-1 W/cm2, pulsed at 20% duty cycle, for 5-10 min? I guess if we use 1MHz it may cause periosteal pain.

PT interventions for the management of Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) dysfunctions include ultrasound therapy and gentle jaw exercises.

A higher frequency setting (e.g. 3MHz) is recommended because of the superficial location of the joint. The decision to use pulsed or continuous mode – and to a large extent, intensity and duration, is determined by the treatment effect desired i.e. thermal or non-thermal effects.
