  • The effects of weakness, tightness, muscle crossing multiple joints. How will this affect activities such as rolling over, sitting up, stair climbing, using ramps, transferring?

Muscles by their contractile nature have the ability to produce movement or maintain the different body parts in equilibrium. In order to optimally carry out their functions, muscles need to be in an ideal physiological state. This includes proper cell nourishment, adequate vascularization and innervation, range of motion, strength etc. Any deficiencies in one or more of these physiological states will significantly affect the individuals ability to effectively and safely carry out purposeful movements. In addition balance may also be affected.

In the case of weakness and tightness of muscles that cross multiple joints such as the quadriceps (hip and knee), hamstrings (hip and knee), gastrocnemius (knee and ankle) etc., the patient will have difficulty initiating a roll over, standing up from a sitting position (and depending on the muscles involved, sitting down from a standing position as well),  transferring and ascending and descending stairs and ramps.
