In normal standing, the center of mass for the average adult is located at approximately the second sacral vertebra. One way to standardize the assessment of standing posture is to use a plumb line. Typically, the plumb line is suspended from the ceiling and is lined up with fixed points on the subject (such as midway between the heels in the posterior view and slightly anterior to the lateral malleolus in the lateral view. The plumb line is used to determine if the subject’s posture falls within the points of reference for ideal posture. [1]
With amputees, the plumb line can be used to achieve optimal alignment of the prosthesis and to determine various limb positions. However, in actual practice, it’s use is not really necessary.
