Typically, it is difficult to hear normal breath sounds without the use of instruments. Upon auscultation (using a stethoscope), normal breath sounds will seem faint or distant. This is a normal feature of breath sounds. On the other hand, many authorities have described abnormal breath sounds using varied terminology and it is usually on your knowledge of these more numerous abnormal breath sounds that you are likely to be tested.
