Ankle Foot Orthoses (AFO) are the most commonly prescribed orthoses. They were formerly known as short leg braces. They control ankle dorsiflexion and plantarflexion, provide medial-lateral stability by controlling movement at the subtalar joint and can also stabilize the knee joint during gait.
The decision to use either a plastic or metal AFO is determined by a number of factors chiefly; availability, the treatment objectives and the patient’s unique needs. Plastic AFOs are most commonly used because they are cheaper, they are more cosmetic, are light weight, have the ability to be interchanged with shoes and offer better foot support with the customizable foot portion.
Metal AFOs are often considered for their durability and strength. Metal can be used in combination with plastic or it can be used alone. Aluminum alloys are the most commonly used metal. Stainless steel may be needed for very heavy individuals and for certain joint components.
